A year into Covid and after many experiments, I’ A year into Covid and after many experiments, I’ve FINALLY made my very favorite face mask/bandana. Sewn from soft, tightly woven linen, it doubles as a lightweight scarf and adds the loveliest pop of color. I don’t misplace it 5 times a day like the little ear masks because it’s part of what I’m wearing and it’s so cute and comfy I look forward to putting one on every day. I’ve screen printed the logo I drew up last year on the latest few and it’s even better, with a subtle splash of pattern that can be changed day to day depending on how you fold it. I’ve got a handful of pretty shades to make these in (dusty lavender, teal, burnt orange, mulberry and steel grey) all 100% linen. I got the opportunity to record a proper cover of this song with @weareinstrumental and it just went live all places you stream music. I have finally gathered the requisite lady balls t I have finally gathered the requisite lady balls to make the linen duster coat of my design brain dreams and it is GLORIOUS. Based on my self-drafted work dress pattern (wearing a recent iteration in blue here) with adjustments for length, and added a collar and lapel for the open front. I’ve made some little copper buttons that I plan on adding for closure but I’m lazy and it’s kind of nice as is. Feels flowy and a bit like floating :) What captures your current creativity? *New music* One year ago I crashed, rolled, and to *New music* One year ago I crashed, rolled, and totaled my truck. I was driving back from recording in LA at 1am when my truck lost control, fishtailed and hit a blockade at 70mph. Rolled (once? twice?), landed sideways in the road and was quickly struck by another car as I tried to reorient and get out. I narrowly succeed yanking my foot out as it was pulled under in the impact, barely freed from my left boot which stayed trapped under the weight of the truck until it was pulled upright. I kicked out the windshield and ran in my one shoe with hardly a scratch to show for it. I’ve had some fear of freeways and problems with my hip ever since, but the miracle of being neither incapacitated nor dead is not lost on me. Both instruments also survived, and in the days following I sat for a long time on an overcast, windy beach with my first-built (nylon strung fretless) banjo and wrote this song. ‘Black Road’ was the first creativity of my new life lease, a stream of consciousness in the wake of shock, survivor’s guilt and fear. I’m glad to be sharing it with you (link in bio), and to be here at all. Next week I will drive the same road, back to LA to record again; full circle. Generally speaking, I feel like dresses are too fa Generally speaking, I feel like dresses are too fancy for my messy style of everyday work wear. Which bugs me because I love them, so I dug deeper into my reasoning and concluded it’s mostly a pockets + utility issue, combined with the notion that ‘I shouldn’t mess this nice thing up’. So. I’ve been focusing on dedicated ‘work dresses’ recently, designing with utility in mind: *intended for layers (I mostly wear this one over jeans, or make sleeveless, apron style types for over shirts/sweaters) *littered with pockets (emphasis on the overall-status double chest pockets, decidedly useful for my jewelry making/stashing of small items) *are made with the express intent of actually being worn. Will they get ‘ruined’? Probably. But you know what, that’s the point here, and I seem to like my beat up clothing a hell of a lot better than the fancies anyway. It’s a miserable sort, as most Gaelic songs are, called ‘Taighean Geala’ (meaning ‘white houses’) about a woman lamenting marriage to a man who lied gravely about her future life with him. He promised her white gabled houses, but upon arriving by boat and far away from her family, she finds he has only a small shack to live in with his two sisters. A year in creativity; my favorite things I designe A year in creativity; my favorite things I designed + made myself in 2020 💛 (in no particular order...) *my darling mini 5 string banjo that I built over about 2 weeks this summer (details in story highlights or past posts) *a fat stack of knit sweaters in my still ongoing obsession with colorful yarns and large gauge needles *leather purse and wallet that I use every day, the hand loop helps from loosing it (in theory) and the wallet has just enough space for everything I carry. *cotton muslin bag with my logo (drawing transferred to emulsion paper and screen printed on using whatever mix of inks I felt like at the time). I made a few of theses that I carry my knitting projects around in. *various folded shirts (mostly made from merino wool) and my favorite linen skirt and dress (also folded). The best two stretch lace bras I’ve made yet. *merino handkerchief masks/neck scarves (find them better than the little ones that go on the ears, I literally can’t seem to loose those fast enough). *leather wrap bracelet, bronze and sterling jewelry, and leather belt with a hammered copper buckle *probably my favorite everyday dress ever in a linen/tencel blend and the overall shorts I made from an old pair of Levi’s 501s. Been meaning to do an intro post since I hit 30K f Been meaning to do an intro post since I hit 30K followers but procrastinated so long now it’s 35K so...better late than never?! Hi I’m Ella / EllaHarp :) I’m a full time musician + creative in the SF Bay Area hustling to make a name for myself writing songs on harp, banjo, and trying to get better at piano. I am obsessed with design and making things. A good few years ago I decided that if I could (realistically) make something, I wouldn’t buy it. Hell of a rabbit hole, but I now make all my own shirts, jackets, skirts/dresses, knitwear, leatherwork, jewelry, you name it. I don’t make jeans or boots (yet) but I do make my musical instruments and also underwear (laugh away, but when you can make a pair in 8 minutes for 50 cents instead of doing laundry or going shopping it’s a real game changer). Spent 4 years at uni in Scotland, am semi fluent in Scottish Gaelic and built a 120 sq ft house on a trailer where I lived for 5 years to make my creative lifestyle work in expensive California. My passion is getting the music to more ears, and inspiring people to get making things and let their creative minds find ways to solve problems, however small.
