Like most birthdays this year, America’s celebration is clouded by many harsh realities. COVID, National division and civil unrest weigh heavy. This is a heavy year in general. Change will take time, but what do we have, if not that? What better than to spend the time we do have bettering ourselves and those around us, our country? It won’t happen overnight, but this is America, and we can do anything if we put our hearts into it. ⠀

These are a few reminders immortalized in metal that I’ve made recently, my own tiny monuments to good over evil. Got this beater for free last year and worked on cosmetic stuff but only just built up the nerve to try tuning. I don’t play well (as evidenced ;) but a half step flat doesn’t help anyone. New tune I wrote this afternoon, trying to pull myself together after watching the live stream of George Floyd’s funeral.
My depression gets much of its fuel from the news, which I generally avoid to keep myself reasonably functioning and maintain a delicate balance of mental health. But these last few weeks have been different. I don’t want to ignore this. My privilege would let me, but I can’t turn a blind eye on the increasingly crushing systemic corruption in this country and the people most affected by it.
Breonna Taylor, Maurice Gordon, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others should not be dead right now. The systems are failing them, and with that they fail America. We should be outraged, and I encourage you to find your own way of using your voice. However big or little, we can all do something.
